Alternatively, you can approach from the northern side by passing through the capital of Portoferraio and the village of Marciana, taking the scenic island roads that connect the western slope and offer stunning views of the high and typical coasts of western Elba.
Starting from the port of Portoferraio, the beach of Cotoncello is just over thirty kilometers away, which can be covered in about an hour. During this time, if it is your first visit to the Island of Elba, you will have the opportunity to observe a glimpse of the island's unique features, captivated by the contrasts of turquoise sea gradually fading into the deep blue, visible through openings in the enveloping and preserving nature. The seabed of the Cotoncello Cove
The areas around Cala del Cotoncello are surrounded by large, smooth rocks that have been eroded by the sea, which make perfect spots to lay out your towel under the sun and enjoy moments of absolute tranquility. The actual beach itself is not very large, with a fine golden sandy bottom that is slightly gravelly, and it is sheltered from the winds.

Vegetation near Cotoncello Beach
The hills surrounding Cotoncello Beach are rich in floral and shrubby vegetation typical of the Mediterranean scrubland.
Around the bay of Sant'Andrea, oak trees and other species, spring and summer blooms of rockrose, broom, and myrtle dominate the landscape, interspersed with delicate lavenders, wild rosemary, or immortelle flowers. Occasionally, even ethereal orchids emerge wild amidst the coastal vegetation, enlivening the scenery and capturing the sensory pleasure of swimming.
Among the floral species, the blooms of the Ottentotti figs (or Witch's Fingers) are particularly spectacular. This succulent plant belongs to the Carpobrotus genus and is easily recognizable by its fleshy leaves and thin fuchsia corollas with multiple petals.

Being small, the cove of Cotoncello is highly crowded and sought after during the peak season, from mid-July to late August. It will be difficult to find a spot for your towel and beach umbrella during the hottest hours of the day, and even the smooth granite rocks nearby, ideal for sunbathing, might be hard to find that peaceful and splendid isolation typical of other seasons.
If you have the opportunity, the months of June and July are the ideal time to experience this wonderful place, one of the most enchanting areas of Elba Island. However, September is the perfect month, until the end of the month, when autumn hues start to paint the foliage of the surrounding woods. The water temperature reaches its maximum warmth (remember that seawater takes longer to heat up compared to the air, so it takes longer to cool down), and many local accommodations in the vicinity offer low-cost solutions tailored to the growing off-season tourism.
